Dealing With Spam

Dealing with spam can cost companies time and money, not to mention the hassle of malicious spam that can spread viruses and cost even more. It is estimated that up to 90% of mail sent to companies is spam related and not content that is helpful or useful to the company but what can a company do to ensure that they have less spam in their mailbox? It may not be possible to stop spam entirely but there are a few things a company can do to be more safe and rest assured that they are not prone to viruses or other issues that can come with spam e-mail.

One thing to do is to let employees know that they should get rid of any mail that looks suspicious. Along with keeping the company safe, it is safe for the employees to delete these e-mails and to know that they are never to give out their personal information.

There are a few programs companies can get that help with this issue and for larger corporations it can be a life saver. These programs delete spam mail but keep what is important. The only issue with such programs is that there are times that important e-mails are automatically deleted because they may resemble spam content. However, these spam filters have a good ratio of not having false positives so they can be way more helpful rather than hurtful.

It is important to realize that spam isn’t going away; however, you can protect your company better by instilling a few rules. Do not allow employees to install unauthorized programs or software and to be sure that they do not visit peer to peer sites. You don’t have to rule with an iron fist an allow them no privileges but do keep your business safe.
